We think it's important to establish enduring connections with the farms that provide the coffee we love to roast. Each farm's coffee was sampled, and we carefully picked our favourites.
Thogarihunkal Estate
Located on the slopes of Baba Budangiri, the birthplace of Indian Coffee is Thogarihunkal Estate spread across 400 acres. Located at 1400 MASL the estate grows high quality arabica and robusta species of coffee. The estate is run by the Gowda brothers whose family have been in the coffee business since 1857.
The coffee species grown here include primarily Chandragiri, Selection 795 amongst others Selections 5 & 7 in arabica and the Robusta varietals include Selection 274.
The biodiverse estate nurtures mixed cropping system where other species such as pepper vines, cloves, figs are shade grown harmoniously with coffee. Apart from this the estate also occasionally spots birds such as Green Pigeon, Siberian Crane, Whistling Teal, Bee Eater, a Drongo, Paradise Fly Catcher amongst others whilst also hosting animals such as the leopords, wild boars and deers who come for their quench of thirst.
The estate also boasts of having won the ‘Flavors of India Find Cup’ award multiple times in years 2008 – 2011, which is a testimonty of the fine coffee this estate produces.
Harley Estate
Led by 5th generation planters Tapaswani and Chandani Purnesh is the Harley estate which is situated in the Sakleshpur region of Karnataka. The estate spans over 800 acres of lush green land and grows both Arabica and Robusta coffees amongst other species such as Cocoa, pepper, Cardamom and areca nut.
The estate was established by the British in the year 1864 and later taken over by the Kutumba family and eventually passed on to the Purnesh family who are running it successfully and are known to grow specialty coffee.
The coffees here grow under a rich canopy of trees and are nurtured with natural flowing spring water and a rich soil. This terroir and the post harvesting efforts lead to a unique tasting cup that the estate produces.
Ratnagiri Estate
One of the most bespoke estates in India is the Ratnagiri Estate situated in the South Indian Western Ghats of Bababudangiri the birthplace of coffee in India. The estate spans across 200 acres and only grows arabica coffee with major varietals including Catuai and Cauvery which have been beautifully intercropped in various blocks of the estate amongst others are SLN 9.
The estate has been with the Patre family since 1927 and is currently led by Mr. Ashok Patre who is known for his post-harvest processing especially his experimental lots which produce a high scoring cup.
The estate is Rainforest Alliance certified and is has a rich ecosystem and diversity with multiple species of animals and birds which frequently visit the estate. Alongside coffee the estate also cultivates pepper.
Rossette works closely with the farm to bring some experimental lots from the estate.
Anaikadu
Named after their daughter, Anaika, and their love for the Great Indian Elephant, Anai Kadu Estate is run by a passionate couple Nisha Thomas and Kurain George. They moved from the hustle and bustle of Bengaluru to the quaint 50-acre plantation that borders the Devamachi Reserve Forest of Coorg, Karnataka. The larger family property named Pottamkulam Estate/Maldare Estate was bought by Kurian’s grandfather, the late K. J. Kurian in 1959. It has been in the family for 3 generations now. The estate grows Robusta along with Selection 795 and Catimor varieties of Arabica. This year Rosstte got a chance to take the Kenyan Style Washed Coffee from them.
All animals endemic to the Western Ghats such as the malabar squirrel, spotted deer, mouse deer, sambar deer, wild boar, and numerous birds and insects are found aplenty in and around the farm. Even elephants, tigers, panthers and bison are a common sight! The farm provides free housing and basic facilities like water and electricity for the workers. Workers living on the premises also have medical coverage. They also have a small government hospital and an Anganwadi for the children adjacent to the property.
Baarbara Estate
Run by a third-generation planter, the Baarbara estate dates back to growing quality grade single origin arabica coffees since 1896. The Estate boasts of its handpicked single origin coffee at elevations of 3850 to 5350 feet, the estate primarily produced quality shade grown SLN 795 amongst other varietals. Apart from coffee the estate also produces quality black pepper. Baarbara is a multi diverse estate with more than 100 species of birds, tigers, boars amongst other mammals which frequently visit the estate. The estate also inculcates organized farming methods to maintain the soil and ecosystem balance.
Kudiraipanjan Estate
Located in the Yercaud region of Shevroy Hills in Tamil Nadu, Kudiraipanjan Estate sits on an altitude of 1500 MASL. Established by the British in 1878 and then aquired by the PKC family who has been running the estate since 1975.
The third generation led estate grows a variety of arabica species namely SLN 9, 795, 5B, Chandragiri, Catimore, Cauvery to name a few which grow in harmony with other species such as pepper, orange, jackfruit, avocado, banana, etc.
The plush estate receives an annual rainfall of upwards of 65 Inches ensuring the soil is fed with adequate macro and micro nutrients essential for producing a quality cup that the estate produces.

Karadykan Estate
Adjecent to the gungegiri estate, Karadykan estate is situated in the Bababudangiri Range of chikmagalur. The estate sits at an elevation of 800-1100 MASL. The farm spans around 250 acres of arabica and robusta species. The estate houses a 100 year old foot water wheel which runs by gravity and produces hydroelectricity which is intern used for coffee pulping. The estate boasts of its great flaura and fauna with wild animals such as bison and spotted deer and birds such as peacock frequenting the estate.
Kerehaklu Estate
Kerehaklu is an estate in the Aldur area of Chikmagalur at an altitude of 900-1100 MASL that is run by the Thipaiah family. Since 1953, they have grown coffee along with various biodiverse produce in coexistence with the local flora, fauna and fungi. They have ventured into the specialty industry in 2019 with a focus on a lot-specific approach and increasing cup scores while being mindful of the ecosystem that surrounds them.
Mooleh Maney Estate
Komal and Akshay of SICC, manage Mooleh Manay Estate, taking over from Ms. G.G. Padmashree, Akshay's mother and a fourth-generation coffee planter. Their family has guided them on how to produce sustainable and environmentally responsible high-quality coffee using traditional farming techniques. Both Akshay and Komal, use a mix of traditional and modern farming techniques at the estate.
The estate is located in North Coorg, on the banks of the Harangi backwaters in the foothills of the Western Ghats and grows Arabica, Robusta, and Excelsa coffee species, all processed either as washed, honeys or naturals. The exceptional flavors of our coffees are a result of their dedicated efforts.
They have now shifted their focus to data collection, with a research block dedicated to studying Coffea species, including Indian native coffee species, as well as climate-resilient varieties such as Excelsa and Liberica. This allows us to continuously improve our farming practices and contribute to the knowledge of coffee cultivation.

Bettadakhan Estate
The Mammen Family, owner of the Badra group of estates, have been working in coffee since 1943. Situated on the northern slopes of the Baba Budan Giri Hills, the region where coffee was first planted in India back in the 1670’s. They have farms growing coffee, pepper, cocoa, cardamom, and various other products. The Coffee from the estate is shade-grown, hand-picked, and sun-dried. Our lots are separated by variety–most of which come from rust-resistant strains which replaced the devastated crops in southeast Asia after the rust epidemic of the 1860s. Rossette has sourced the SLN 795 varietal from the estate which also grows other varietals like SLN 9 amongst others.
